OCTOBER 9,1874 Establishment of the Universal Postal Union At the International Postal Congress in Paris in 1948, it was decided that the members of the Universal Postal Union would issue in 1949 a commemorative stamp to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Union's founding. A competition was announced for the publication's design in Greece, which did not yield the expected results. The Hellenic Post Office commissioned the stamp's design to the Fine School of Arts professor Ioannis Kefallinos (1874-1949) inaugurating then their collaboration which lasted until 1954. The theme of the stamp is "The teenager of Marathon". Τhe teenager was a bronze statue of a teenager winner of races found in Marathon in 1927 and dated back to the 4thc. B.C. This stamp was honoured twice: in 1950, as the most beautiful stamp of the commemorative issue in the world and its proclamation as one of the ten most beautiful stamps of the year by the Philatelic Review Stamp Collector's Annual in London. The Universal Postal Union - UPU (Universal Postal Union, and in French Union Postale Universelle) was founded on October 9, 1874, by the Treaty of Bern. It was initially called the General Post Union and aimed at the smooth and coordinated postal communication between states, according to detailed rules of procedure. UPU mutually committed its members to facilitate the handling of mail at no extra charge and recognise other countries' stamps. From 1947 UPU joined the U.N., maintaining its headquarters in Bern, with the participation of all member states of the Organization. The Union aims to continuously improve the quality of postal services through international cooperation, providing advice, mediation and technical assistance in this direction.

SEPTEMBER 24, 1828 ESTABLISMENT OF GREEK POST OFFICES BY IOANNI KAPODISTRIA
Count Ioannis Kapodistrias (1796-1831) a descendant of an aristocratic family with a political tradition, a diplomat of the Russian state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a politician, served as the first Governor of Greece from January 1828 until his assassination in Nafplio on October 9, 1931. As Governor, Kapodistrias promoted important reforms for the organisation of the newly formed state: he founded the Military School of Guards, the National Mint, built new schools, founded the Ecclestiastical School in Poros and the Orphanage of Aegina. His important offer, however, was the establishment of the Hellenic Post. On September 24, 1828, with the resolution “On the establishment of regular Post Office”, the first postal service, the “General Post Office”, was established to cover the state needs for communication of the local services. Initially, five central post offices were established (in the cities of Argos, Epidavros, Tripoli, Aegina, Syros) and with a staff of nine infantry and sixteen cavalry post officers who collected the correspondence from the Greek countryside, and delivered it to its recipients. Alexander Loukopoulos was appointed the first general manager of the post office, who drafted the first postal regulation in 1828, according to which post offices were established in fifteen cities of the Peloponnese, sixteen cavarly and nine infantry postmen were hired, and a ship to Epidaurus and vice versa.

The History of Exhibit

In August 1940, World War II was approaching one year. Greece was ruled by Ioannis Metaxas, who was neutral, but it was apparent that he was on the side of Great Britain. Italy, an ally of Nazi Germany at the time, was claiming supremacy over Britain in the Mediterranean, and since the 1920s, has resorted to intense diplomatic and political pressure on Greece. After the defeat of France on June 22, 1940, Italy's challenges to Greek sovereignty increased significantly, while a series of diplomatic and military episodes, from the end of June to the beginning of August 1940, showed the aggressive policy of Italy. They aimed to enter our country into the war or its surrender to the most robust suggestions. In order to emphasize the security feeling and pride of the Greek people in the challenges of the Italians, the light cruise ship "Elli" was ordered to attend the festivities of Megalohari in Tinos. In the morning hours of August 15, the Italian submarine "Delfino" was found outside its port to torpedo the passenger ships "Elsi" and "Esperos. However, the Italians saw a warship arriving at the port, and even though many people were standing on the port, they hit the "Elli" with three torpedoes. One torpedo hit a target while the other two missed and exploded on the waterfront. One non-commissioned officer and eight sailors of "Elli" were killed in the attack, while the wounded amounted to 24. In the mid-1950s, the shipwreck of "Elli" was partially lifted and sold for scrap metal. In 1985, Greek divers discovered the remains of the Italian torpedo that sank the "Elli". The find is on display at the Maritime Museum of Piraeus.

History of the Exhibit

Dimetrios Vikelas was born in Ermoupolis, Syros on February 1, 1835, the son of two important Greek families of the 19th century.

At the age of 17, Vikelas settled in London and worked in his uncles’ business. At the age of 41, he decided to leave the business and turn exclusively to letters and social action.

In 1877 he settled in Paris, where he developed a wide circle of acquaintances. In the summer of 1894, the International Sports Conference was held in the French capital and Dimitrios monitors his work as a representative of the Panhellenic Gymnastics Association. On June 23, the closing date of the Conference, it was decided to revive the Olympic Games. Baron de Coubertin’s original idea was the first Olympic Games to take place in Paris, but Vikelas’ inspirational speech turned the situation around:

“… In Athens, we certainly not be able to organize majestic celebrations, but our many shortcomings will be filled by the cordiality of our reception. We will not offer our guests entertainment worthy of the occasion, but we have to show the monuments and the ruins of antiquity and lead them to the places where the ancient Greeks performed their games…”

Vikelas’s bold initiative aroused enthousiasm of the public and the press in Greece and was the reason that contributed to the unexpected great success of the revival of the Olympic Games in Athens, but also the consolidation of the institution in the coming years. In 1894 he was elected the first president of the International Olympic Committee until 1896 when he was succeeded by Baron de Coubertin.

He died in Athens on July 20, 1908 suffering from cancer.

Dimetrios Vikelas is considered, together with Georgios Vizyinos, the introducer of the ethnographic narrative in Greece. “Loukis Laras” is his most famous work, and has a special place in the history of Greek literature.

Dimetrios Vikelas developed an important public benefit project. He Founded the “House of the Blind”, the “Sevastopoulio School” and in 1899, the “Association for the Distribution of Useful Bools” for the publication of books at a cheap price. After his death, he bequeathed his rich library in the Municipality of Herakleio, Crete, the well-known today “Vikelaia Municipal Library.

Alexander III of Macedon commonly known as Alexander the Great, was born in Pella (a city in Ancient Greece) in 356 BC, was the son of King Philip II and Olympias, princess of Epirus. He ascended to the throne at the age of 20 and spent most of his ruling years conducting a lengthy military campaign throughout Western Asia and Northeastern Africa. By the age of thirty, undefeated in battle, Alexander had created one of the largest empires in history, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. In 334 BC he invaded the Persian Empire and began a series of campaigns that lasted 10 years. Following his conquest of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), Alexander broke the power of Persia in a series of decisive battles, including those at Issus and Gaugamela. He subsequently overthrew King Darius III and invaded India in 326 BC. He died on the 10 th June 323 BC in Babylon, the city he planned to establish as his capital. He did not manage to execute a series of planned campaigns that would have begun with an invasion of Arabia. In the years following his death, a series of civil wars tore his empire apart. Alexander's legacy includes the cultural diffusion and syncretism which his conquests engendered. He founded some twenty cities that bore his name, most notably Alexandria in Egypt. Alexander's settlement of Greek colonists and the resulting spread of Greek culture resulted in a new Hellenistic civilization, aspects of which were still evident in the traditions of the Byzantine Empire in the mid-15th century AD. Alexander’s military achievements and enduring, unprecedented success in battle make him the measure with which many modern military leaders compare themselves. He is often ranked among the most influential people in human history.

Participation in competitions- Public orders:
1990: After a competition he undertook the engraving of 1.60m x 2.50m xylography/woodcut for the Municipality of Volos, which was walled in at the Volos City Hall.
1991: He represents Greece with engraving (woodcut) in an international competition, in London, for the creation of a Contemporary Art Museum in Namibia.
1994: It undertakes the engraving of the medal of the city of Sitia.
1996: He represents the Athens School of Fine Arts, creating a copper engraving for the Mediterranean Olympic Games in Bari.
1997: He is responsible for the creation of a video film on Engraving, funded by the Arts and Letters Centre of the Ministry of Culture.
1998: He undertakes the creation of the stamp series “Ancient Greek Writers” for Hellenic Post.
2004: He participates in the “Days of Greek Film and Literature” organized by the Greek Embassy in Tokyo, with the video “between us”. - At his initiative, in co-operation with the Cultural Foundation of the Japanese Embassy, ASFA held a two - day seminar on traditional Japanese xylography/woodcut.
2005: He creates 11 copper etchings for Messolonghi, for the H.&S. Moschandreou. - On his initiative and in collaboration with the Cultural Foundation of the Japanese Embassy, the ASFA held a course-demonstration of Japanese calligraphy.
2007: He designs engraved stamps for Hellenic Post with Rigas Velestinlis and Kostis Palamas. - He creates a woodcut portrait of Rigas Velestinlis on upright wood printed on a collectible envelope on behalf of the Hellenic Post.- He engraves a portrait of Konstantinos Karamanlis in woodcut on behalf of the Karamanlis Foundation and exhibits it at the Benaki Museum.
2011: He creates the copper stamp ''Hermes 2011'' (7 variations) on behalf of the Hellenic Post, on the occasion of the celebration of the 150 years since the publication of the first Greek stamp. He created and continues to create commemorative plaques and medals for various organizations, as well as collectibles jewelry applying engraving. In this context He engraved the “lucky” jewels of the “Friends of Music” Society of OMMA between 1998 and 2016
2016: He drew three feuillet stamps and he engraves a medal for the 2,400 years anniversary since the birth of Aristotle.
2017: He creates 7 stamps on the theme ‘’The Wise Men of Antiquity’’’

He has been a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece since 1979, and in 1984-1994 he served in various administration posts (curator of engraving and treasurer, vice president, president, international relations officer). Member of other associations and companies:

Founding member of the Movement for A Chamber of Fine Arts of the Mediterranean (and vice president 1992 - 1995). Consultant at the Literature and Arts Center (1995-1997).
Member of the ASFA Professors Association (President 2005 - 2013 & 2014 - 2018).
Member of the ELTA Advisory Council for Philatelism (2005-2017). Member of the Secondary Tier Jury of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece (2005-2006) and the Primary Tier Jury 2016-2017. WORK EXPERIENCE
2018 - 2022 Professor at the Graphic Arts Dept. of the Athens School of Fine Arts. During the period 2020 - 2021 she was a member of the First Tier Classification and Evaluation Committee of the Hellenic Chamber of Fine Arts (EETE) in the Department of Engraving.
1995 - Responsible for the design and supervision of the printing of the Hellenic Post stamps. During this period more than 250 stamps were created. She has also designed covers for books, magazines and CDs, as well as logos.

About the artist

She studied Sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) under the professorship of Ioannis Pappas and Theodoros Papagiannis. She also attended the Applied Painting and Scenography workshops at the ASFA and travelled to Great Britain, where she studied postage stamps and the operating methods of the art departments of the British Post Office. Konstantinea worked with the Hellenic Post for twenty years, where she designed 200 postage stamps, five block stamps and commemorative medals for the 150 anniversary of the founding of the Hellenic Post.

About the artist

Panagiotis Gravalos studied Painting at the School of Fine Arts under the great painters and professors Spyros Papaloukas and Yannis Moralis.

The professor of Engraving, Yannis Kefallinos, who noticed his designs and excellent engraving, recommended that he should also work with engraving. However, his collaboration with the great engraver A. Tassos made him choose Printmaking and how to practise it.

A firm believer in the social and educational role of art and the artist, Panagiotis Gravalos taught Engraving at the Athens Technological Institute of the Doxiadis Schools from 1961 to 1967. He was a founding member of the Centre for Visual Arts. From 1966 to 1993, he was a permanent associate of the Hellenic Post and was the designer of many series of stamps, for which he won international awards.

In 1971, a sports poster he had designed won first prize in a worldwide competition in Warsaw. Since then, it has been exhibited at the Museum of Graphic Arts in Poland.

From 1986 to 2000, he was an artistic collaborator of the Ionian Bank.

He designed many of the pins for the Athens Olympic Games. He also designed the 24 official commemorative coins issued by the Mint of the Bank of Greece, eight gold and 16 silver, and was the artistic adviser of the medals for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

About the artist

Anastasios Alevizos was known as Tassos. From 1933 until he graduated from the School of Fine Arts in 1939, he studied engraving with the other great engraver, Yannis Kefallinos. He studied in Paris, Rome and Florence. He won the prize for engraving at the Pan-Hellenic Art Exhibition in 1938 and the state prize for engraving in 1940. His acquaintance with Dimitris Galanis, an essential engraver of the inter-war period, seems to have been decisive for his career.

Following the outbreak of the Greek-Italian War in 1940, Tassos, like other students of Kefallinos, designed posters to encourage the Greek people. During the Nazi occupation, he was a member of the resistance organisations EPON and Artists of EAM and continued underground production of anti-Nazi propaganda material.

After the liberation, Tassos began to work on subjects other than war, such as nudes, still lifes and portraits. He also started to use colour in his woodcuts.

After his studies in 1939, he designed covers and decorative elements for the literary magazine Nea Estia.

Immediately after the liberation, he was appointed artistic director at the publishing house "Ta Nea Vivlia" (The New Books), which was founded by the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) in 1945. The house was closed in 1948.

In 1948, he began collaborating with the Organization for the Publication of School Books (OESB, later the Organization for the Publication of Educational Books, OEDB). During his collaboration with OESB, he illustrated many books for primary and secondary schools. His first book was the 6th-grade textbook, published in 1949.

In 1948, he became artistic advisor to the "Aspiotis-Elka Graphic Arts Co"; from 1954 to 1967, he designed stamps on behalf of the Hellenic Post. From 1962 until his death, he designed stamps for the Republic of Cyprus. In 1959, he became Head of the Graphic Arts department at the Athens Technological Institute, where he taught until 1967.
